REAL CHRISTMAS

When you take the time to read the Christmas story this year, instead of turning to Luke 2, I encourage you to read John 1 instead.

Remind yourself that the real story of Christmas is so much more than just the baby in the manger. Remember that what happened when the Word became flesh is HUGE! The Christmas story is not just a nice bedtime story we tell once a year - it is an epic account of the Word who was in the beginning - without beginning stepping down into our world. It is the momentous occasion of the Light entering into the darkness.

What is the point of Christmas? It is glory. When the angels appeared over the fields that night to the shepherds they didn't sing "Jingle Bells", "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas", or even "Jesus Christ is Coming to Town." The first words they sang were "Glory to God". Don't miss the point that Christmas is all about God's glory, and don't forget that "God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him" (John Piper). If you took away all the presents, the activities, and even the family (and I love my family), would you still be 100% satisfied in Jesus? That is glory, and that is the real point of Christmas.

There is so much to celebrate in the Christmas story - so many miraculous elements to it. But what is the real miracle of Christmas? Is it the appearance of angels? Is it the star that guided the wise men? Is it the virgin birth? Is it God becoming a human being? These are all miracles to be sure, but don't see only the circumstances and miss the real miracle of Christmas - love. John 3 says that "God so loved the world that He sent His only Son..." The miracle is that Jesus did not have to come. God did not have to make a way for us. We did not deserve Heaven's perfect One, but nevertheless God's love prevailed. That is the real miracle of Christmas.

Please take a moment to push the pause button on your busy lives this Christmas season and spend some time with Jesus, remembering what's real this Christmas.

The Reason for Christmas

"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost" - Luke 19:10.

Probably not the verse from the Gospel of Luke that you were expecting to read when it comes to Christmas. You were probably expecting Matthew 1 & 2 or Luke 1 & 2. Those chapters share with us the Christmas story. What I want to focus on is the why of the Christmas story.

If you were to ask a child "Why do we celebrate Christmas?" you would probably get a number of answers: to celebrate Jesus' birth, to give gifts, etc. And yet I don't believe that is even the most important question. I believe the most important question is "What is the purpose of Christ coming to earth in the first place?" The answer is THE REASON FOR CHRISTMAS!

The verse given above is the reason for Christmas. Ultimately, Jesus was born of a virgin, was laid in a manger, grew up in a carpenter's home and lived for 33 years here on earth "to seek and to save what was lost." The purpose of Christmas is to celebrate the coming of our Savior for OUR sins!

We have heard it said over and over that "Jesus is the Reason for the Season." As I have shared with my church family, I disagree. WE are the reason for the season. WE are why Christ came to earth. WE are why He was born of a virgin. WE are why He lived here on earth. WE are the reason for Jesus being betrayed, scourged, beaten, whipped, spit on, and mocked. WE are the reason for His death on the cross. WE are why He was buried in a borrowed tomb. WE are why He arose.

He did all of that for you and I. He did it all "to seek and to save what was lost." We were lost in our trespasses and sins. Our punishment for sin was death (Romans 6:23a) and Christ came to earth, took your sin and my sin on His body: "God made him (Jesus) who had no sin, to be sin for us, so that in him (Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Because of Christ, you can be saved. Because of Christmas, you can have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him" (John 3:16-17).

As you begin to reflect on Christmas this year, may your thoughts pass by the gifts, food, lights, and party's. May your thoughts rest on Jesus Christ who loved you and gave Himself for you! Take time this Christmas season to share this wonderful, glorious, magnificent news with someone who needs the greatest gift of all: eternal life! Now, that is a present worth giving and receiving!!

Thanksgiving - All about God, not our Stuff!

May this time of Thanksgiving be an opportunity for all of us to focus on the Provider of our stuff, rather than on the stuff!

May this be your prayer: (from The Valley of Vision, Praise and Thanksgiving)
O MY GOD,
Thou fairest, greatest, first of all objects,
my heart admires, adores, loves thee,
for my little vessel is as full as it can be,
and I would pour out all that fullness before thee in ceaseless flow.
When I think upon and converse with thee
ten thousand delightful thoughts spring up,
ten thousand sources of pleasure are unsealed,
ten thousand refreshing joys spread over my heart,
crowding into every moment of happiness.
I bless thee for the soul thou hast created,
for adorning it, sanctifying it, though it is fixed in barren soil;
for the body thou hast given me,
for preserving its strength and vigour,
for providing senses to enjoy delights,
for the ease and freedom of my limbs,
for hands, eyes, ears that do thy bidding;
for thy royal bounty providing my daily support,
for a full table and overflowing cup,
for appetite, taste, sweetness,
for social joys of relatives and friends,
for ability to serve others,
for a heart that feels sorrows and necessities,
for a mind to care for my fellow-men,
for opportunities of spreading happiness around,
for loved ones in the joys of heaven,
for my own expectation of seeing thee clearly.
I love thee above the powers of language to express,
for what thou are to thy creatures.

Increase my love, O my God, through time and eternity.

FREEDOM!

Psalm 119:32 "I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free" (NIV).

When we think of being free, we usually associate it with no boundaries or barriers; those things that keep us hemmed in. However, the Psalmist is very clear that as he follows the commands of God he is free.

Paul tells us that we need to "run the race." Not walk, crawl, or even jog. We are to run. We are to move quickly in the commands of God. We are to obey quickly. My father-in-law has defined obedience as this: "to immediately do all that is asked with the right heart attitude." And when we do obey the Lord, freedom is what we find.

This week we have reflected on those who served and are serving to keep our freedoms secure. When it comes to our relationship with the Lord, do you see yourself as free? Are you running free? If not, my encouragement to you is to "run in the path of your (God's) commands." Allow the Word of God to be your focal point.

Run free today. Don't walk. Don't crawl. Don't slither. Run. Run free in what you do. Run free in your life. Run with total reckless abandon following the running track laid out by God Himself. Remember: following God's commands, all of them, results in freedom!

You Can't Fail!

"My dear friends, stand firm and don't be shaken. Always keep busy working for the Lord. You know that everything you do for him is worthwhile" (1 Cor. 15:58 CEV).

Bad news, tragedy, horror, illness, and death. The list could go on of events and issues in our life that can shake us and deter us from accomplishing anything. And yet, God says to "stand firm and don't be shaken." We must understand that we will fall but we have the strength to rise. No matter what may come our way, we must not allow the philosophies, ideas, and morals of the world to distract us or cause us to fall. God wants us to be standing firm because that is the only way we will be able to keep "working for the Lord."

In the midst of those strong wind blowing days, keep in mind that what is done for the Lord has extreme worth. Keep close to your heart the words of Paul found in Romans 8: "What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? . . . Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? . . . No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Vv. 31-32,35,37).

Because of our relationship with Christ, as believers, we are victors! We are already winners! We are on the winning team! We have nothing to lose! It is a done deal. What is done for Christ will ALWAYS accomplish what God wants it to. So if it is for God, go for it. Don't let the assumed difficulties or your own personal apprehensions to defeat you. YOU are a winner!

What would you attempt to do if you knew you couldn't fail? Just remember what Jesus said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:26).

God's Workmanship

Ephesians 2:10 says "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (NIV).

An amazing verse that many of us are familiar with. And yet, I believe the most important word in that verse is not "God," "workmanship," or even "created." I believe the most important word in that verse is found with only three letters. It is the word "are." May not be flashy or mind-blowing, but it sure does bring comfort, strength, and even confidence to those who are His!

Just think, at this very moment, God is working in you to make you what He wants you to be! He is using the events, issues and circumstances in your life to prepare you for the future. A future that could be literally seconds away!

How would you answer the following: Describe God in one word. Amazing. Love. Kind. Forgiving. Father. Wonderful. Truth. The list could go on forever. After this past week I would have to answer: worker! Probably not what you expected. However, as I have seen the work of God in people's lives it brings me to tears!

God is constantly loving, forgiving, meeting needs AND working: healing, comforting, saving, answering prayer, etc. God is doing amazing, wonderful things in people's lives every day. It is time that we start reflecting on the positive in our lives and the lives of others rather than on the negative.

Besides, God is working in our lives at this very moment for His "work" for us. He has something He wants you to do. Are you ready? No. Why? God is still working!

What, me worry?

Worry is defined as: "to be fretful, perplexed, anxious; to cause mental distress to." Yeh, I know, I am not supposed to worry! Well, we do, don't we? We probably wouldn't call it "worry" but that is exactly what we do. We "worry" about our family, our jobs, our possessions and so much more. And yet, if we take time to reflect on ALL that we do "worry" about, how much of it is really under our control? The answer: NONE OF IT!

This past week was one in which I have to admit, I "worried." There were issues in my life that, despite my lack of control over, I "worried" about. And yet in it all, God was still there and took care of them.

Isn't it mind-boggling that we can sing about God's amazing grace, His mercy and faithfulness and then still find ourselves spending too much time in the "worry" department? Over and over again I have been reminded that not only is God faithful to me on a daily basis, He is fully aware of everything going on in my life and has it all under HIS control. I am so glad that God is never surprised by things in my life, let alone yours!

Take time today to: (1) Thank God for His faithfulness in your life; (2) Confess those times when you "worried"; (3) Ask God to help you trust Him more each day.

And remember these words from Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount":
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? [26] Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? [27] Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life" (Matt. 6:25-27)?

Warning Lights

Coming from behind you, they may be red and blue. As you sit in your car it may be orange. But whatever color it is, warning lights are designed to make us aware of some type of emergency or letting us know that our vehicle needs repair.

Usually when we see lights flashing, we slow down so that we don't find ourselves as part of the problem. If we see our "check engine" light come on, we have a mechanic check out what the problem is.

But what about your life? It would be easy to have a light go off when there is a problem. However, God did not give us one of those. He did provide us with events, people and most importantly the Holy Spirit to be the warning lights in our lives. One of the responsibilities of the Holy Spirit is to convict. Jesus says in John 16:7-8 "But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. [8] When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment." (Italics mine)

As believers, being indwelt by the Holy Spirit is to result in our producing or living out the fruit of the Spirit. And until we submit to the Holy Spirit's leading in our lives and allow Him to direct our path, we will never be able to walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

So, this is what we have to do. Take the Bible and read, study, and apply to our lives what we find. Then we must walk in the Spirit and allow the Spirit to produce in us: "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance" (Galatians 5:22-23). And at the same time we must flee "the works of the flesh which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like" (Galatians 5:19-21a).

Think about that check engine light. We don't like it when it comes on, but it sure can save us from a bigger headache later. Besides, I don't know anyone who likes to be stranded on the side of the road. So, take this warning and check your life and make sure that God hasn't sent a warning light for you. If He has, then don't ignore it, address it, confess it, and draw near to Him.

Are you kidding?

We have all heard them. In response to our asking for help or for someones participation, we have heard them and then are amazed that people actually think we believe them. What am I talking about? Excuses. The reason why help or participation is not going to happen. Now don't get me wrong. There are times when the excuse is legitimate. However, I don't believe the percentage is very high.

We have heard things like, "I am too busy," "That's not really what I am good at," "well...uhm... well..." And to think that we are all guilty of this at some point in our lifetime.

What I want to challenge you with today is this: Do you really believe that God accepts your excuse? Whether it is for not coming to church, not participating in church activities, or serving Him, do you really think that God hears and knows your excuse and says, "Ok. I understand"?

This coming Sunday I am starting a series through the book of Jonah. He definitely gives us some great indicators of the need of "Returning to God." Take the time to consider what indicator from the life of Jonah applies to you. If you are not at church to hear the message and would like a copy, contact the church from our website at www.ohcalvary.org.

A Good Fall?

Many times when we fall it is considered a negative situation. It may be a result of tripping over something or losing our balance. We often injure a body part and the healing time can be extensive.

However, I want you to think of falling as a good situation. I want you to think about falling in regards to your position before God. When was the last time you truly humbled yourself before the Lord?

Peter wrote to Christians: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time" (1 Peter 5:6). James wrote: "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up" (James 4:10).

The old life is focused on self whereas the new life is to be a life focused on God and His plan for our lives rather than what we want for ourselves. In order for that to happen, we must fall to ourselves and allow God to "lift us up."

Someone once said, "Humility is the acceptance of the place appointed by God, whether it be in the front or in the rear."

Now is the time for humility if we want to see God do something great in our lives and do something with our lives. The time for self-reliance, self-promotion, and self-indulgence is gone. Now is the time for humility if we want to see God do something great in our lives and do something great with our lives.

I close with a couple of verses from Proverbs:
> "The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor" (15:33).
> "Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life" (22:4).

It's all about who?

Galatians 1:10 "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ."

Wow! What a convicting verse! Paul, who clearly understood his position in Christ clearly knew that it wasn't about himself or what he had done or would do. Paul knew that it was all about Christ.

A popular country song goes something like this: "it's all about me, it's all about I..." What a vivid picture of our society and the attitude of so many even in the church. We don't share the gospel because we are afraid of what people will think about us, or we don't want anyone to be offended. What a shame.

Paul acknowledged that it wasn't about him, it was all about Christ. Paul's desire was "to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death..." (Philippians 3:10).

Who are you all about? Is it all about you or is it all about Christ and what He has done for you?

Am I still looking?

Isaiah 55:6 says, "Seek the LORD while He may be found..." James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you..."

When we lose our keys or something of value, we usually start looking for it immediately and don't stop until we have found it. And thanks to a comedian, do we ever keep looking once we find it? No!

Just like the parables of the lost sheep, coin, and son, we usually don't let something of value stay lost. So, the questions that need to be asked are: Is your relationship with the Lord the most valuable relationship in your life? If it isn't, why not? If it is the most valuable relationship, are you seeking after Him like a deer pants for water?

The great reality is that the Lord desires for us to seek after Him. He promises that if we seek Him we will find Him. He also promises that as we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. He will not leave us out there in limbo. He is like a parent who is cheering on their child who is learning to walk. The parent has their hands out in anticipating of supporting that child. I believe that God is the same. He has His arms out anticipating our walking into them for strength, support, encouragement, and love.

Are you seeking after Him? If not, what is getting in the way? It may be sin! James 4:8 continues by saying: "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

If we take this verse to heart, we have to admit that sin is what we need cleansed of and if we are not seeking after Him, it may be because we have more than Him (double-minded) in our thoughts.

The challenge for us then is this: Do I have more than Him on my mind? Is there any sin in my life that is keeping me from Him? Am I seeking after Him with all my heart?

No "I" in TEAM!

As a big college football fan, I must admit that I love this time of year. Now that college football has begun, there is always a reporter talking about some key player(s) for a team and how those players are the "impact" players for their team. And yet, I have never watched a game when only those 2-3 players were the only ones on the field. To be a great college football team requires all 11 players on the field being committed to their role and doing their best each and every play. We all know that many games are won, not because of 10-15 great plays but because of 1-2 plays where either someone DID their job tremendously or 1-2 players did NOT do their job.

The same is true in the church. In many churches there are a few people who are constantly being seen. However, 1 Corinthians 12 is extremely clear about the importance of the whole "body." As you read these words, do not be focused on whether or not you are the "impact" player. Be more concerned that you are a "PLAYER!"

1 Corinthians 12:14-20 "Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. [15] If the foot should say, 'Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,' it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. [16] And if the ear should say, 'Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,' it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. [17] If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? [18] But in fact GOD has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as HE wanted them to be. [19] If they were all one part, where would the body be? [20] As it is, there are many parts, but one body." (Bold mine)

A great football team is successful not because everybody is the quarterback or the middle linebacker. A successful church will be such because everybody knows their role AND fulfills their role! So the question is: Do you know your role? Do you know your spiritual gift? If not, find out. If you do, then use it! And remember these words: "Only one life twill soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last!"

What about your legacy?

"May all who come behind us find us faithful!" Those words ring in my ears today as Senator Ted Kennedy is remembered. I am reminded that despite one's popularity, fame, and even fortune, it is what we leave behind, that speaks the loudest.

Despite what many will say, Senator Ted Kennedy did not leave a positive legacy as it relates to the values and beliefs of a large majority of society. When he entered politics it was as a pro-lifer, however, he was pulled to the other side by fame and fortune.

I am not here to debate about the life of someone. However, it has caused me to reflect on what I am doing now, understanding that this is what will be remembered. There is an album entitled something to the effect of "The line between the two." The meaning is that what really counts is not the day you were born or the day you enter eternity. What really matters is the time that you were alive, (i.e., the line between the two).

May this be an opportunity for you to reflect on the legacy that you will leave behind should Christ tarry. Is what you do each day, impacting the kingdom of God or the kingdom of self? "May all who come behind us find us faithful!"

A Beautiful Creation

As I sit and attempt to update this blog, I find myself staring through a window in my study at home admiring God's handiwork. As the breeze blows and the sun shines, I can't help but praise the Lord that of all that He created, He chose to give me life and was willing to give His Son for my redemption.

Let me challenge you that if you have not praised the Lord lately for all that He has done for you and blessed you with, that you do so immediately. Take a few moments and reflect on all that His hands have done. He is amazing!

May the following words from Psalm 150 be the catalyst for you to praise the Lord: "Praise the LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty firmament! Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness! Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes! Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!"

May today be a day of praise to the One who is All-powerful, loving and gentle. Praise God for what He has done, who He is, and just because He is!

Sorry, been so long

Greetings from India. Sorry that it has been so long. Things have been really moving since we arrived. I have now taught the 7 Laws of the Teacher twice and preached twice using an interpreter. Today, Thursday, June 25th, we had 5 saved in VBS. PTL!!

The weather is hot, humid and right now it is raining. Hopefully the electricity will come back on before bedtime. That way the fans will keep the air moving.

Thank you for all your prayers. God is clearly working through us and in us while we are here. The group is really working well together. We have two more days of VBS (Friday and Saturday). I will be teaching on Friday and then preaching one time on Sunday.

We are headed toward home on Monday. We will spend a couple of days in Bangkok before we head home. It will be good to see my family and church. Not enough time to share here, but will at a later date. Have a great day!

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Wow! I'm on my way!

Well, I'm on my way. I am presently in Bangkok, Thailand getting ready tonight to fly to Kolkata,India. The rest of the group is doing well, and we are excited about this opportunity. It is going to be hot, but that is tolerable. Our prayer is that no one gets sick!

It seemed like it would never get here and now, here it is. Thank you to all are praying. Your more of a blessing than you know.

I will do my best to update this blog as often as possible. Will probably not be everyday. Have a great day and God bless!

400 and Counting

As I prepare to go to India I was informed that there are presently at least 400 children signed up for the Vacation Bible School that we will be holding while in India. That's right, 400 children. I am overwhelmed by that number. It will definitely be amazing to see so many children ready to hear the Word of God. A lot of planning has gone into this trip and I believe with all my heart that we will see many of these children come to realize their need of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

I covet your prayers not only for the group as we travel and minister but also for those of our families that will remain at home. Being gone for almost 3 weeks may not seem like a big deal. However, we all know that it is not necessarily the time but the distance.

To my wife I say thank you for your encouragement and support as I participate in this trip. You will constantly be in my thoughts and prayers. To my son, be a great boy for mommy and have a great time in all that you will be doing while I'm gone.

To my church family, pursue Christlikeness and be visionary. I love you all and am honored to be your pastor.

I will update my blog as often as is possible while I'm gone. Please return frequently to read updates. I will also do what I can to post pictures taken on my facebook page. Have a great day and remember: the greatest gift we can give to the Lord is ourselves!

A Pastoral Challenge

Over the last several days, I have been bombarded by Scripture as it relates to my role and responsibility as an shepherd to a flock of believers. It is now time for me to begin taking what I have been challenged with and instituting it not only in my personal walk with the Lord but also in my role as a pastor. The influence of the Holy Spirit is crucial to the effectiveness of all that I believe God wants me to do.

There is so much to say, and yet I am still coming to grips with much of it. However, let me say that in the weeks and months to come, I believe that God is leading me to, not necessarily make sweeping changes, but to systematically, in my own life, become in ALL areas what God wants the church to be like.

Ultimately, it must be my goal to become as Christ-like as possible so that I lead not only through the preaching and teaching of God's Word, but also through my personal and public life. Basically, I must strive to be an authentic disciple of Jesus Christ so that others see what is expected of them and that it is possible through Jesus Christ.

Is it going to be easy? NO. Will there be bumps in the road? YES. Yet, when I do it for the Lord, then it will be His strength I am seeking and using, not my own. And that will result in God receiving the glory, not myself.

An Encouraging Word

Proverbs 12:25 (NLT) "Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up."

A struggling economy. Hatred. Self-indulgence. War. Poverty. Pain. Depression. Disease. And that is just on the front page of the newspaper! We live in a world consumed by all of this and more. Every day we are surrounded with negativity and a focus on self. Our society is lost and hopeless. To many there seems to be no light at the end of tunnel. The result is that "worry weighs a person down." More people are frustrated, upset, disgusted, tense, stressed, and sick. All because of worry.

What our world needs is Christ. What people in our sphere of influence need is an encouraging word. They need to know that God loves them. They need to know that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). They need to know that in Christ there is hope.

It is time that we as believers start focusing on encouraging. We all enjoy an encouraging word. Several years ago people would stand on a street corner or in a mall with a sign that simply read: "Free Hugs." The goal was to simply give people a hug. Why? Because God created us not to be independent, but to be interdependent. We need each other. We need companionship. We need friendship. And what great group of people can be the encouragers in our society than those who have been encouraged through the grace of God?

Are you an encourager? Do people want to be around you? Practice JOY: Jesus, Others, You! Allow your life to be a source of love, gentleness, kindness and encouragement to those in your circle. Strive to cheer up at least 3 people each day. When that becomes too easy, double it. After awhile, you won't even think about it. It will happen naturally.

Oh, and by the way, let me encourage you today. Psalm 145:18 tells us: "The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth."

A Philippians 3:13-14 moment

Wow! I have, over the last 2 days, witnessed how quickly what we can hold onto can be taken down. The original building at the church was torn down and is now an empty area. What had been dreamt about, prayed about, planned, designed, built and used is now just a memory in picturess and video.

As I reflect on the lives, many of who I have never met, who were impacted by the ministry from within those walls, I am humbled and amazed. Watching the destruction of that building brought me to tears as I reflected on all that this church has stood for over the years. A building that was used by the Lord for 50 plus years to proclaim the gospel is now gone. What do we do now?

The same thing that this church and many like it have been doing, we go forward. We must strain toward what is ahead. We must "press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called [us] heavenward in Christ Jesus" [added]. God challenges us all that to be stuck in the past results in us being useless for the future. It is not wrong to remember the past, we just have to make sure that we don't dwell there.

Where are you? Are you stuck in the past? Do you focus on what your spiritual life use to be like? How on fire you were back then? Or are you pressing "on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of"? Make sure that you are not putting your confidence and hope in that which moth and rust will destroy!

A Servant Heart

Over the last 12 hours I have been impacted by the servant heart of two people who, already having busy schedules, have been willing to sacrifice for my family and I. In a day and age when the busyness of life never seems to slow down, I thank the Lord for these two men who love the Lord and care about others. I will not share their names here, but know that they are appreciated beyond words.

Please take time to this weekend to reflect not only on those who have reached out to help you, even in a small way, and take the time to reach out to someone as well. There is no greater way to demonstrate your love for the Lord than to obey His commands. Commands such as: love your neighbor as yourself, be kind to others, and much more.

Remember: Being Christ to the world is more about what we do Monday through Saturday than what we do on Sunday!

Have a Great day!!

What is 'Auxano' all about?

2 Peter 3:18 commands us to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." As I have reflected on this verse over the last couple of days, I was intrigued by the word "grow." The word in the Greek is auxano and simply means "to grow, enlarge, increase." Our responsibility is to grow, or increase in our knowledge of God and His Word. James tells us that if we lack wisdom we should ask God (James 1:5). And yet, there is a way for us to do that, in part, according to Proverbs 1:1-2 "The proverbs of Solomon son of David, King of Israel: for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight."

As we know "wisdom" is simply the use of knowledge in a practical and successful way. So let's put all of this together. God wants us to grow in our knowledge and gain wisdom. In order for us to use the knowledge in a practical way or in our every day life, we must grow in our knowledge of God and His Word.

The only way that this will happen is by immersing ourselves in God's Word. We have libraries and bookstores full of books that will help us become more knowledgeable. However, I want to challenge you to not put so much emphasis on all the the other books, and focus your time and attention on the one book, the Bible. Remember that 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that "Scripture is God-breathed;" not the other books!

My challenge to you is this: Let's Auxano Together! Let's study Scripture together and challenge and encourage each other. The purpose of this blog is to challenge you in your auxano-ing (grow-ing) and provide a place for me to update you when I go to India in June!

Have a great day.
